Surviving coin flips
Publish date: September 29, 2021

Hey, Poker playas!

A lot of players shifted online during the pandemic, but the shift is never easy. one of the biggest reasons is that online is just built differently.

Online by default is more fast pace unless you start going for the really big events. You have to play a fast pace game.

Even some of the big tournaments are built to have 20 minutes blinds while live games are adjusted to 40 minutes. and that brings us to the topic for today.

Coin flipping.

Coin flipping or coin flip – what does it mean?

Coin flip is when you are in a position that you are risking things which could be a significant amount of chips on a gamble.

Although you could be ahead.

Here is a perfect example, let say you have ace-king and you raise. but was met with a reraise and your only choice is to go all-in.

Maybe you believe you are ahead or maybe you think he has only a small pocket pair. You are now risking everything as you want to win a big pot.

The problem is that if you were to just flat call. Let say you have ace-king and both did not come out on the river. You have to fold. or even if you hit, your opponent may not call, hence you are losing the opportunity to win big.

hence you are pushing all the chips at once to get. Get paid or bust out.

It is most of the time luck.

in the case of pocket pair versus 2 overcards. statistically, you are ahead. but it could also be one of those days that even when you are statistically ahead. your opponent is lucky.

But do not give up. remember the stats will always catch up. That small percent will catch up someday.

Flipping on online games is more common.

When you actually are playing on a good structure. There would be always more room to fold.

But since online games are a more fast pace. players are more accustomed to risking it all.

When you are playing online. your focus is on your screen only. Unlike on live games, there are more things you can do like having small talks with your friends.

Hence online games will have to make it faster or it will be boring to a lot of players.

because the blinds by default are faster. You are placed in a do-or-die situation more. Hence online players are more aggressive by default because it may be their chance to have a healthy stack before their stack becomes easy to call.

So how do you survive it?

As we have mentioned earlier the difference between playing live and online.

A live game with a good structure. For example, if you are playing WSOP where the blinds per level are 2 hours long. You can avoid flips easier. Because the blinds are not that pressured and it is easier to maintain a healthy stack.

But online. it is a whole different story.

More people are willing to flip with you. and that is why it would be very difficult. but at the same time, it is actually good as well.

Because more people are willing to flip. make sure when you have the real premium cards to get paid in full.

Stay safe poker playas!
