Vietnam
Vietnam widened its lockdown measures in its industrialized north on Tuesday, May 25, 2021, to combat its biggest COVID-19 outbreak.
The health ministry announced 457 new COVID-19 infections on Tuesday, the biggest jump since the 190 cases seen on May 16, driven by clusters in factory zones in two northern provinces.
Bac Ninh, home to production facilities of Samsung Electronics, started a curfew and other travel restrictions from Tuesday, state media reported.
The capital Hanoi on Tuesday shut down restaurants and banned gatherings at public areas, including physical exercises in parks. Hanoi has recorded 220 cases since late April.
Vietnam has reported at least 5,860 infections in total, with 44 deaths.
Malaysia
Despite a state of emergency imposed in January, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s government has been seen as struggling to rein in the infection of the coronavirus.
Malaysia has reported fewer cases than neighbors Indonesia and the Philippines, but its ratio of infections, at more than 16,000 per million, is Southeast Asia’s highest, data from the Center for Strategic and International Studies shows.
Malaysia’s caseload went past 444,000 with 1,700 deaths as of Monday, the third highest infection rate in the region behind Indonesia and the Philippines.
Thailand
Thailand reported on Tuesday, May 18, 35 new coronavirus deaths, a record daily number that included the country’s youngest victim up to now, a two-month-old baby, as authorities struggle to contain the third wave of infections.
Bangkok, the epicenter of the current outbreak, recorded 876 new infections on Monday, still the highest among the country’s provinces.
Bangkok has now recorded 28,658 new infections since the outbreak emerged in April.
Singapore
After recording almost zero or single-digit daily coronavirus tallies locally for months, Singapore has seen the number of infections grow recently and include variants such as more contagious strains first detected in India.
Singapore, which reported 24 locally transmitted COVID-19 cases on Monday, has re-imposed for a month the toughest restrictions on social gatherings since exiting a lockdown last year in a bid to contain the outbreak.
The good news!
Most Asian countries have secured deals to obtain the vaccine. Although the rollout may take some time. It is underway.
The battle between saving the economy and saving people’s lives is a tough battle. People should do their part to help curb the spread of the virus.
