Natural talent versus Studying hard

“In the past, I have made no secret of my disdain for Chef Gusteau’s famous motto: Anyone can cook. But I realize, only now do I truly understand what he meant. Not everyone can become a great artist, but a great artist can come from anywhere.”
Anton Ego –RATATOUILLE

As we spend the night thinking of what to write for February.

We spent some time looking for inspiration. And we found one. Thankfully we found a pro that helped us write this piece.

Anyone can cook

Like cooking, anyone can become a poker player. the mechanics are actually quite simple to understand.

The truth is anyone can play poker. The game is so easy to understand that anybody can easily grasp it. Yes, you can even win some small tournaments.

That is how easy it truly is.

but not all are fated to be champions.

Not everyone can become a great artist, but a great artist can come from anywhere

There are people just born with it. They simply were born having the natural talent for the game. They could sense it, play with their opponent.

One such player is

Mike Takayama

One such player is Mike Takayama. Most people will tell you. he is born to play poker. There might be truth to it.

Mike Takayama is the first homegrown Filipino poker player to win a WSOP bracelet and received other awards both local and international.

And most people will tell you that mike did not need to read a lot of books. He was simply gifted.

We are not claiming he does not study nor working hard, but he is truly gifted.

Maybe somewhere out there. There are a lot more players who have the knack for the game.

But what if you don’t have those natural talents?

When you don’t have the skills. study hard!

Not everyone can be like Mike Takayama. Some people just do not have the skills.

It does not mean you can not be a champion.

you just have to study harder.

Flo Campomanes

Flo Campomanes is the first Filipino to win the APPT main event. to prove it was no fluke. He is also the first Filipino to win the Red Dragon Main Event.

Both events are the most prestigious events in Asia.

but Flo is not a natural player like Mike Takayama.

In an interview after the event. He admits that it took him 13 years of hard work and studying to reach that stage.

I do not play as much as the other players. but I study harder than anybody else.

some players are not as talented. but it does not mean you can not become a champion.

Coincidentally, Mike Takayama sits at the number 1 spot while Flo sits at number 2 in the GPI Philippines.

Talent and studying are both very important. but one must know himself.

But if you are not talented. then be like Flo. study study study.

people can become champions. talented or not. you just have to know yourself more.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.” – Sun Tsu – Art of War

One of the most important things is we must learn if we are talented or not. If you love the game so much but you believe you do not have the talent. Then passionately study the game.

You can be a champion.

Sometimes all it takes is hard work.

So if you love the game, push!
