Reggie “Gutshot King” Bautista – current no 1 at GPI Philippines 2020
Publish date: December 9, 2020

There is a new number 1 for the Philippines GPI 2020. Born in the Philippines but is now living and playing in Florida, US. He has been slowly climbing steadily to the top of the charts.

And now, he is currently at Number 3 on the GPI Philippines all time and Number 1 for GPI Philippines 2020.

Do you want to know more about who is the so-called Gutshot king?

Here is an exclusive interview with Reggie “Gutshot King” Bautista.

How did you start playing poker?

I started back in 2000, right after I graduated from college. I was invited over to a home game with some friends, and here I am today.

Do you consider yourself a full-time poker player or a casual player?

I consider this a hobby that I enjoy so much. I quit my job as a Recruiter for a Digital Media company back in February of 2020 to be closer with my parents and for my dads’ health. So I just play tourneys on the weekends when I can. It feels like I’m playing full time since I’m not busting out so early and running deep.

Did you realize you were number 1 at the GPI for the Philippines 2020?

I didn’t realize until November when a friend of mine in poker looked me up and let me know that I was ranked so high in the Philippines. I didn’t realize there were players of the year from different countries.

Why did people start calling you the Gutshot king?

Hahaha. I’m actually the one that created my so infamous title as I was uploading videos on Facebook as I’m in the money and making final tables. Some people think that I make Final tables on hitting gut shots which I keep laughing about until this day. Now people are showing me their GutShot draws and hits which make it so good and entertaining for the game.

Do you plan to visit the Philippines any time soon?

I was actually there in 2019 since my brother was getting married. Once the travel restrictions have changed and the poker rooms in the Philippines resume back, I plan on being there in early 2021 to accompany my Dad.

What is your biggest advice to aspiring poker players?

Well, I always have fun first and foremost because I believe poker is a social game which is why I fell in love with this game 20 years ago. When you have the right attitude and outlook in life, the game makes it so much enjoyable that you’re able to have the right mindset knowing it’s just a game when you either get outplayed/outdrawn or made a mistake/wrong decision.

What do you believe is the best asset to becoming a champion?

The mind especially in this game. Understanding the purpose and objective of not only your opponents but for yourself as well before you enter the arena and getting acclimated to the change at all times.

Do you have any message for Filipino poker player?

Possess discipline and develop strategies according to your table dynamics. Have balance in your life along with spacing your days of play since poker can be a grind in tourneys where you might be playing 8-10 hours in a day that you need to rest your mind because of the mental fatigue. Lastly and most importantly, I give thanks to the Almighty one regardless if I cash or not because this is God’s plan in my journey.

Mabuhay!
