Ego – The greatest enemy of a poker player
Publish date: November 28, 2020

We ask a simple question to poker players, “what do they believe is the biggest weakness of a poker player.” Surprisingly we got two different answers.

The players who people believe are good players would mention ego, While the players on the bottom of the list would say luck.

Should we consider luck as the main weakness of a poker player?

Poker, it takes a moment to learn but a lifetime to master.

A saying that many players have heard, but how many players understand this?

Most poker players believe they understand the game. We have met players who would call themselves a professional poker player but would commit the most basic of mistakes.

How well do players know the game?

When you are playing poker, you are playing against people. People do not stay the same, and people can also grow.

The dynamics of the game will continue to change.

Different continent, different style.

Even currently, the game is played way differently in different parts of the world.

We interviewed one of Taiwan’s multi awarded poker player, Pete Yen Han Chen is their a difference in the one poker players around the world.

Poker is way different when you play in different parts of the world. When you play in Vegas you are more likely to play with old players who are limping, when you go to Europe they are more aggressive. while Asia is a mix of both worlds. Asia is more gamblish. Let say your opponent has a baby flush, if you are in Vegas most likely the player would be shy to show his card while in Macau the player would proudly show it.

When your playing against people. by nature players are different. believing you can play the same way and believe it is effective. Is the proof that Ego has taken over.

Same cards, different player, different game

We once overheard a local player say, “I prefer to have Ace-king than aces. Aces are over-rated.”

However, is it?

Even when you play only on a local level, the truth is every country will have a fish, and every country will have a pro. The way you play against them should be different.

In an interview with a former banker who turned pro for a poker site in India, Kunal Patni. Who is making news by recently winning another international event. We ask him how he would play aces. His reply was the following.

“I would first consider who am I playing against and what type of player he is. The way I would play with aces would be different if I am playing against a fish or a pro. You can not play the same hand against the player the same way. Who you are playing against plays a big factor in how you should play a hand.”

Ego, if you want to win, then drop it.

The truth is, there is wisdom to Einstein’s quote.

Stop assuming you know the game. The biggest pros admit they are still learning. Even online is a different ball game altogether.

Daniel Negreanu admits he goes back online regularly to fix his flaws in the game.

Poker will always grow and poker will always change. If you are losing and do not believe in what we wrote. Then ask yourself “has Ego taken control of my game?”

We hope we can help you with this small article! We are only here to support you.

See you soon poker playas!
