Editors note

Which day is best to enter?

In modern multi-day poker tournaments, entry patterns for Day 1 flights often show Day 1A with strong turnout due to satellite tournaments, Day 1B with fewer entries, and the final Day 1 flight with the most players due to the belief in more chips being in play. But does entering the last Day 1 help in becoming a champion?

While entering the last Day 1 can offer more chips and insights into the tournament, it also brings tougher competition and riskier play. Early entrants might face less aggressive fields and have more time to build their stacks steadily.

Data from previous tournaments, including the IVP Cup, reveals that final table players often come from average or low stacks at the beginning of Day 2. Rarely do chip leaders dominate to the end.

For example, in the IVP Cup 2024 – Event 4, Kristene Flores and Irene, chip leaders on Day 1A, started Day 2 with average stacks but made it to the final table. They finished in the top 5, showcasing that success hinges more on skill and resilience than on starting stack size.

In essence, strategic play, adaptability, and endurance are more crucial than the entry strategy for tournament success.

Ultimately, what matters most in multi-day poker tournaments is qualifying for Day 2, rather than focusing on which Day 1 flight has the most chips in play. The journey to the final table and becoming a champion depends more on strategic play, adaptability, and resilience than the initial stack size or the specific entry day.

But if you did not qualify for day 2, then whether which day had moe chips does not really matter.
