Hey, Poker player!
Most of the time we only hear about poker players hitting it big, but we seldom hear the stories behind the player.
Quite recently a new player started playing poker. She is a model, a DJ, and a content creator.
Nothing new there. There are a lot of more prominent celebrities that do play poker.
But then she hit the big news as she is retiring from being a DJ, Yes, she is one of the top female DJs in the country, and the local scene was sad about the news.
Patty Tiu was one of the early female DJs in the music scene. She broke barriers for other aspiring female DJs to enter the scene.
Becoming one of the top DJs in the Philippines and she is an inspiration to others to follow their dreams.
So let us get to know more about it.
A lady standing tall and fighting real struggles
A decade ago, Patty Tiu was starting her career as a DJ. but bad news hit her hard when diagnosed with cancer. She was told she had only 5-8 years to live. She was just starting her career as a DJ.
She opted not to undergo chemotherapy but instead had 5 surgeries, 2 of which were major operations.
“I was already 22 years old when I found out about my cancer. I didn’t want to do the radiology route. I didn’t want to lose my mobility,” she explained.
“To me, I was lucky to have been given this second life already. Whatever I’m able to do with my second life, this is it. I don’t want to put the people I love into hardship when it comes to seeking treatments or even getting a second opinion.” quoted from an interview.
During her career as a DJ,
As people bop and groove to her beats, few know of the struggle in the DJ box.
As people listen to her groove and dance the night away. In the corner of the booth, there was always a pail for her to grab if she throws up.
Only to come back on stage after a few minutes just to give people joy.
Retiring from Dj and the next advanture
As she waves goodbye from the world of Dj in order to pursue other dreams, she is Lady who is determined to live life with a purpose. To break new barriers and leave a legacy behind.
Currently into web3 and proudly believes that it is the future.
Quoting from an interview
“It is our chance to lead. We may be behind most of the time in a lot of things. But we haven’t completely lost the race just yet. We should adapt,” she said during a recent Web3 debate. This is where the blockchain enters.
She has set her eyes on another mountain to climb and has set her mind to do it.
Playing Poker
In some strange ways, Patty may have been destined to play poker. A few years ago, there was a chance for her to know more about poker as she is a model.
In a poker room that was holding a go-see for usherettes. She was one of the top choices by the organizer of the go-see but was overruled by the management.
After the pandemic, the poker world is the one that came knocking on Patty’s doors. She was invited to play a game being shown live on social media. She took it and slowly broke barriers once again.
She is making the poker world realize there is a bigger world out there at the same thing making people realize poker is a skill game.
Her Poker Adventures so far
Patty fell in love with poker and has now started playing in tournaments. Although she has not made a major win yet. But she is already getting close.
In the recently concluded BluffMasters 2023 icebreaker – Ladies’ event. Patty came close to clinching her first-ever title.
She had learned quite a lot from players and coaches that her game was becoming sharp. She joined but her first try was not that successful. she joined again and was able to accumulate chips.
Slowly but surely she was on her way to winning it. One player after another, her opponents were slowly eliminated.
She had an aggressive style guided by the teachings of more seasoned players until there were only two.
It was the perfect opponent for her. Hazel Timonera is a Masters Poker Club pro and the current APT Ladies event Champion.
Hazel TImonera had a great year in 2022 in both local and international tournaments.
It was a David and Goliath story. A truly fitting opponent for Patty Tiu.
There was no chop, there was no deal, it was a battle for who would become the champion.
Hazel had the advantage but Patty was determined to win it. Slowly she was able to win some chips and close the gap on the lead..
How we wish it was a Cinderella story and the underdog won it. but it wasn’t the case.
The vent wrapped up with Hazel winning the event and Patty Tiu was the First runner-up.
But there was nothing to regret or be sad about, Patty is a strong woman. She wanted a trophy earned not given. She was able to face a champion.
Patty Tiu is a fighter, It just was not her time. But she is accumulating experience and learning. A diamond that is still unpolished.
We would love to see her play once again and we hope someday when she secures her first trophy to be there for her.
Because the road to becoming a champion may have ups and downs, but the journey is what makes winning it more meaningful.
