RVS 2024 – EXPANDING
Publish date: October 22, 2024

hey, Poker Playas!

RVS is once again taking the lead in navigating Manila’s increasingly crowded poker scene. The capital is flooded with poker rooms, each vying for attention, but the player base hasn’t grown at the same rate. This oversaturation creates fierce competition, where each poker room tries to stand out but often ends up fighting for the same pool of players.

The real challenge isn’t just the internal competition among local poker rooms but also the rising competition from neighboring regions. Places like Taiwan and Vietnam, which are nearby and rapidly growing their poker markets, are attracting more and more players, including high rollers, away from Manila.

These destinations are offering bigger guarantees, better amenities, and overall more appealing experiences, drawing attention from Manila’s poker crowd.

RVS seems to be positioning itself smartly amid this landscape. Rather than getting lost in the crowd, they are taking calculated steps to lead, innovate, and distinguish themselves in a market that’s becoming increasingly difficult to navigate. While many poker rooms might be focusing solely on immediate payouts or promotions, RVS’s strategy appears to be more forward-thinking, focusing on building a sustainable model that keeps players engaged even as external competition rises.

It’s a necessary approach, especially with neighboring regions eyeing a larger slice of the poker pie. To stay relevant and successful, poker rooms in Manila will need to offer more than just cash games and tournaments; they’ll have to create a sense of community, innovation, and player loyalty. If they don’t, other markets could easily pull players away.

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE PROVINCES

Targeting Western players for poker events is common in many Asian countries, as these players often have greater buying power and bring prestige to events. However, relying solely on attracting international players can create a market that fluctuates based on global trends, travel restrictions, and competition from other poker destinations. In contrast, investing in the growth of local markets, especially in provinces like Cebu, Davao, Cagayan de Oro, and General Santos, can build a more stable and self-sustaining poker ecosystem for the future.

By helping the provinces develop their own poker scenes, the industry in the Philippines would cultivate a homegrown player base. These regions have already shown potential, with notable local champions and thriving poker communities. Strengthening provincial poker rooms not only increases participation but also diversifies the poker market, reducing over-reliance on a single area like Manila. Furthermore, it spreads the economic benefits more evenly across the country.

While the allure of Western players with deep pockets is undeniable, the future growth and sustainability of the poker scene in the Philippines lie in nurturing the local market, particularly the provinces, which can drive long-term success and resilience.

RVS 2024 – the Cebu and DAVAO Leg

The RVS tournament is making waves with its unique structure this year, holding two separate Day 1A events in Davao and Cebu. This marks a milestone for local tournaments, as it’s the first time such an approach has been taken in the Philippines, allowing players from different regions to qualify before converging at the Metro Card Club for Day 2. Although Taiwan tried something similar earlier, this move shows a deeper commitment to engaging players across the country, particularly from the south.

editor note

As of press time, it appears that the official main poster for the RVS (Regional Vegas Series) has yet to surface on their official Facebook page, despite the event’s anticipation. This lack of an official visual announcement raises some questions, especially since promotions are vital to drumming up interest for such large events.

Interestingly, both Cebu and Davao have been notably active in promoting their legs of the RVS, making their presence felt in local poker communities. This regional focus could indicate that the provinces are driving the bulk of the promotional efforts, with local organizers and poker rooms doing their best to attract players.

editor note

The recent RVS initiative by Metro Card Club is a significant step in the right direction, with adjustments to the buy-in and qualifying percentages to accommodate the market and encourage broader participation. What stands out is that Metro Card Club, the oldest and one of the most respected poker rooms in the Philippines, is finally taking a bold move that truly supports the local poker scene, rather than focusing solely on competing in the Asian market.

For years, Metro has been synonymous with the Filipino poker scene, yet its recent focus, particularly with events like the APT Challenge, has seemed more geared toward keeping pace with international competition. While it’s important to remain competitive in the Asian circuit, the local poker community has often yearned for more direct support and engagement from Metro.

Whoever spearheaded this event deserves recognition. The RVS structure, which extends the reach of Metro beyond Manila and into key provincial poker markets like Cebu and Davao, demonstrates a real effort to embrace the Filipino poker community as a whole. It’s a refreshing change that prioritizes local players, giving them more opportunities to shine on a national stage.

Whether this marks the beginning of a new chapter for Metro Card Club, with more initiatives to nurture and grow the local poker scene, remains to be seen. But this is definitely a promising start, and hopefully, it signals more proactive support for Filipino players and events in the future.
