Alexander “Boks” Ungria once again hit the waves lately due to being the chip leader of last December’s special tournament held at Okada Manila.
He then went on and made a final table appearance of the main event.
So what is he up to now? we were able to catch up with him lately and ask a few more questions about his plans for the future.
Coffee Cups and Q’s
It has been a long time before there were any live events in Metro Manila, you did great on the main event as well. how did it feel being able to hit the live felt again?
It felt great being able to play on the live felt again, I did win a few online events during the lockdown. but nothing compares to feeling the card with your own hands.
You came in on day 2 as the chip leader of last year’s December special tournament. Did it help boost your confidence?
It did help but because I played poker for so long, Sometimes just one mistake and it is all over, It was an advantage but I also have to protect my lead and to continue to gets more chips as the blinds goes up.
What was the turning point for you on Last year’s special tournament?
Turning point of the game for me was day 1. When I got the Chinese player who had a massive stacks. I got him and That’s why I became a chip leader. after that i felt more confident with my game and slowly grinded the other players out.

Do you think it is easy to play big live tournaments now?
Of course it is still hard to play in big events as the pros are back like Mike Takayama and Lester edoc, There are also a lot good players like Jr Villanueva, Gerardo lubas, Jason Ambata who are also now hungry to win. But I have also won a lot of events both live and online. Hence when I joined a tournament my mindset is “Matira matibay!”
What inspires you to continue to play poker?
My inspiration is my wife and my kids , they are always beside me ups and downs, especially my wife, I love my wife. She inspire me to keep pushing even when we are facing a lot of challenges.
Any message to our readers and your friends?
To my co poker players! Thanks to all of you, I’ve learn a lesson a lot from you! Even if I played for so long and poker has been my life, I have always learned more as we face each other on the felt. Thanks also to Pokercast Asia.
