Halloween Special – Top 10 Horror movies
Publish date: October 21, 2021

Hey, poker playas!

Halloween coming, since there are some quarantine measures are still in place and no tournaments yet. Most likely people will binge on supernatural stuff soon. so why not do it while Halloween is near?

for this round let go for the top 10 horror movies!

Top 10 horror movies!

Of course when you write about the top 10. people’s opinions would differ. just horror alone would have many more subcategories like gore and stuff. so we would be writing on different stuff in the coming days.

For this list, we look into different sources and made a list on which one was on the top. but we would also add our own opinion on some of the movies.

Feel free to add your opinion as we would be happy to hear about it. thankies!

The Exorcist(1973)

The Exorcist is a 1973 American supernatural horror film directed by William Friedkin and produced and written for the screen by William Peter Blatty, based on the 1971 novel of the same name by Blatty. The film stars Ellen Burstyn, Max von Sydow, Lee J. Cobb, Kitty Winn, Jack MacGowran (in his final film role), Jason Miller, and Linda Blair. It is the first installment in The Exorcist film series and follows the demonic possession of twelve-year-old Regan and her mother’s attempt to rescue her through an exorcism conducted by two Catholic priests.

The exorcist is a classic, You may not agree that The Exorcist is the scariest movie ever, but it became the highest-grossing R-rated horror film ever and the first to be nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars (it earned nine other nominations and took home two trophies). But outside of its critical and commercial bona fides, the film is well-known for the mass hysteria it inspired across the country, from protests over its controversial subject matter to widespread reports of nausea and fainting in the audience. Its dramatic pacing and somewhat dated effects may seem quaint compared to some contemporary horror, but there’s no denying the power the film continues to have over those who see it for the first time.

Hereditary(2018)

Hereditary is a 2018 American supernatural horror film written and directed by Ari Aster, in his feature film directorial debut. It stars Toni Collette, Alex Wolff, Milly Shapiro, and Gabriel Byrne as a family haunted by a mysterious presence after the death of their secretive grandmother.

To be honest, we have not watched this one. but it being on the top 10 did stir our curiosity. we hope to add more soon.

The Conjuring(2013)

The Conjuring is a 2013 American supernatural horror film directed by James Wan and written by Chad Hayes and Carey W. Hayes. It is the inaugural film in The Conjuring Universe franchise. Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga star as Ed and Lorraine Warren, paranormal investigators, and authors associated with prominent cases of haunting. Their purportedly real-life reports inspired The Amityville Horror story and film franchise. The Warrens come to the assistance of the Perron family, who experienced increasingly disturbing events in their farmhouse in Rhode Island in 1971

Well, Ed and Lorraine Warren were American paranormal investigators and authors associated with prominent cases of alleged hauntings. Edward was a self-taught and self-professed demonologist, author, and lecturer. Lorraine professed to be clairvoyant and a light trance medium who worked closely with her husband.

They try to basically incorporate scientific methods to prove there are ghosts.

Later on, the movie included Annabelle. the doll that is possessed by a demon. Hey, if Spiderman was smart enough to stay away from when Annabelle was coming home. It should really be scary.

The shining (1980)

The Shining is a 1980 psychological horror film produced and directed by Stanley Kubrick and co-written with novelist Diane Johnson. The film is based on Stephen King’s 1977 novel of the same name and stars Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, Scatman Crothers, and Danny Lloyd.

The pacing of this movie is incredible. what you think might be a harmless scene would suddenly become one heart-stopping scene. of course, you do not want to spoil it for people who have yet to watch it.

The best we can say is “Here Johnny!”

Texas chain saw massacre

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is a 1974 American horror film produced and directed by Tobe Hooper from a story and screenplay by Hooper and Kim Henkel. It stars Marilyn Burns, Paul A. Partain, Edwin Neal, Jim Siedow and Gunnar Hansen, who respectively portray Sally Hardesty, Franklin Hardesty, the hitchhiker, the proprietor, and Leatherface. The film follows a group of friends who fall victim to a family of cannibals while on their way to visit an old homestead. The film was marketed as being based on true events to attract a wider audience and to act as a subtle commentary on the era’s political climate; although the character of Leatherface and minor story details were inspired by the crimes of murderer Ed Gein, its plot is largely fictional.

As we are not big fans of gore-type horror movies. We really can’t say much about this film. although at this point looking at the other top 10, we definitely will add another article on our own favorite choices that did not make it to the list.

The Ring

The Ring, is a Japanese media franchise, that was later adapted for English speakers, based on the novel series of the same name written by Koji Suzuki. The franchise includes eight Japanese films, two television series, six manga adaptations, three English-language film remakes, a Korean film remake, and two video games; The Ring: Terror’s Realm and Ring: Infinity.

To be honest, this came out with the Grudge(Ju-on) at the same time when there was the horror craze. We love the Grudge way better and another Thai movie shutter. both did not make it to this list. But as we have to write about what the majority thinks. so we still love this movie. it still a great scary movie. Our writers are just spoiled with horror movies.

Halloween

Halloween is a 1978 American independent slasher film directed and scored by John Carpenter, co-written with producer Debra Hill, and starring Donald Pleasence and Jamie Lee Curtis in her film debut. The plot tells about a mental patient who was committed to a sanitarium for murdering his babysitting teenage sister on Halloween night when he was six years old. Fifteen years later, he escapes and returns to his hometown, where he stalks a female babysitter and her friends, while under pursuit by his psychiatrist.

So sorry, we do not have a writer currently who loves slasher films either. so can add anything on this list.

Sinister(2012)

Sinister is a 2012 supernatural horror film directed and co-written by Scott Derrickson. The film stars Ethan Hawke, Juliet Rylance, James Ransone, Fred Thompson, and Vincent D’Onofrio. The plot revolves around true-crime writer Ellison Oswalt (Hawke) whose discovery of Super 8 home movies depicting grisly murders found in the attic of his new house puts his family in danger.

Insidious

Insidious is a 2010 American-Canadian supernatural horror film directed by James Wan, written by Leigh Whannell, and starring Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, and Barbara Hershey. It is the first installment in the Insidious franchise, and the third in terms of the series’ in-story chronology. The story centers on a couple whose son inexplicably enters a comatose state and becomes a vessel for a variety of malevolent entities in an astral dimension.

It

It, titled on-screen as It: Chapter One, is a 2017 American coming-of-age supernatural horror film based on Stephen King’s 1986 novel of the same name. The film was produced by New Line Cinema, KatzSmith Productions, Lin Pictures, and Vertigo Entertainment It is the first film in the It film series as well as being the second adaptation following Tommy Lee Wallace’s 1990 miniseries, It tells the story of seven children in Derry, Maine who are terrorized by the eponymous being, only to face their own personal demons in the process. The film is also known as It: Part 1 – The Losers’ Club

Note from the writter.

Yes, we do admit we have missed a lot of new movies that came out and could not write about it. The question is why write about it?

Before the pandemic, most people became so busy with life trying to make ends meet that watching a movie became a luxury.

There was almost an event every day and that day will come soon again. but now that it is not there yet. We wanted to share what we might have missed and while there are still lockdowns in place, It might be the best time to catch up.

We still will add a few more articles like the top 10 Asian horror movies. or maybe something with a Filipino taste to it soon. for now

Stay safe poker playas!
