So you love poker but are wondering if poker is still a good income source.

The answer is it depends.

Yes, especially tournaments where you can have 1 big boost of income.

Maintaining the income stream is more difficult.

Especially if you are stubborn. 

As a player

Right now, there would always be some tournament that is definitely a good value online, like happening soon is the main event of USOP. 10 million GTD and 100 USD buy-in. it is worth it.

There are also smaller ones held daily. If you were to hunt the small tournaments especially freerolls where the structure is bad that it becomes a luck game. You would win one eventually. 

But if you want to be a consistent winner, then no. there are factors that you should understand and must take into consideration.

Poker is not just a luck game

A lot of times players would complain to me that poker games are now just luck games.

Not true

If poker is just a luck game. then why do we have players that are winning consistently? You can not always be lucky and you can not always be unlucky.

But the truth is there are factors that can affect your game that stop you from being a winner. Somehow in big tournaments, we still have players that are always cashing out?

If we were to focus only on the common mistakes players make. this article would be novel.

And most of the time when a player lost. they are solely focused on the hand they lost, not the whole tournament. Was the whole tournament just one hand?

There is no one formula to win. 

To be a consistent winner in poker. You would need to know a lot of those theories, Understand the logic behind those theories. Then when you start playing, you have to assess whether those theories are applicable to the current situation or you should deviate from them.

Here are examples of poker theories. 

Poker starting hand chart

Poker hand charts are actually great, wondering if you should call, raise or fold preflop? there are even charts that go beyond the normal starting hand chart and take into consideration if there are limpers or if the table is aggressive what would be the best move for you to do.

The poker hand chart is base on the percentage where your hand versus your opponent.

let say you are the button and everybody folds. you are confronted with only the small blind and big blind. Most of the chart we have seen so far is you need to raise with the pocket deuce.

The reason they tell you to raise is that the chance of your opponent will have a better hand is small. So most likely both will fold. 

Here is where things deviate. If both the small blind and big blind are pros, most likely they would fold hands that are off. example 72 offsuit.

However, if the player is a wild crazy guy that is adamant to defend his blind no matter what. he would call.

You can either now flat call preflop with small pairs and raise higher with your bigger pair. 

But if you do now know your opponent. Using the chart is a safe bet.

Poker is still actually a good way to earn a living. but in reality. you have to become better.
