Trese – Netflix’s first Philippines made anime
Publish date: June 12, 2021

Hey, Poker playas!

This week was definitely an exciting week for the Philippines. As we would be writing a lot more stuff about poker in the next few days. We decided to start it off by not talking about poker!

The world is changing. Sometimes we should also look into other stuff that could enrich ourselves as a whole.

What is happening in our world aside from poker? and the best way to kick it off is to talk about one of the hottest topics in the Philippines.

Trese

Why is there hype about Trese?

Trese (translation. Thirteen) is The first Philippine-made anime Stream by Netflix. It is a streaming television series based on the Filipino Komik(comic) series of the same name by Budjette Tan and Kajo Baldisimo.

It is produced by BASE Entertainment,

A Filipino Komiks turn into an anime by Netflix? Mabuhay!

So what is Trese(Comics)

Trese (Thirteen) is an award-winning Filipino horror/crime black and white komik written by Budjette Tan and illustrated by Kajo Baldisimo.

It tells the story of Alexandra Trese, a detective who deals with crimes of supernatural origin. The series has been published and re-released multiple times and has won and been nominated for several accolades since it began its publication in 2005.

To give you a better idea, It has a feel of a detective story where crimes are being investigated, Mix with X-files as it deals with the supernatural, mainly Philippines local folklore, mixes with local pop-culture plus actual places in the Philippines.

Local Philippine folklore

The comic featured local supernatural creatures like the Kapre, Aswang, Mananagal, Nuno sa punso and so much more.

It paints a world where these mystical creatures exist naturally but hidden from society.

However, some are not hidden totally, If one is familiar with the local celebrities and business tycoons in the Philippines. They are portrayed as not only rich but as mystical creatures that hide their true mystical identity,

Not to spoil the fun

There are tons of local pop-culture references if you were to read the comics. The comics did a good job of creating an alternate world where such things existed.

It would be a dishonor to reveal some of the key elements that make the comics worth reading. We highly advise people to check it out.

The difference between the anime and the comics.

The anime visually is good, some of the graphics are definitely worth looking into. There were actually some scenes that deserve a second look to check if it was a photo or an anime. Graphic-wise, the anime was great.

However, the story and vibe of the anime are a little different from the comics.

The comics had the vibe where it was more like a case file and each one a self-contained story at a slower pace.

While the anime was a fast pace and left cliffhangers to attract the readers to watch the next episode.

The story was changed to suit the anime. Fans of the comics would be disheartened by the change but would still marvel at the graphics.

Should you watch the anime or read the comics first?

We recommend watching the anime first, then read the comics. Although the comics would lack stunning visual graphics as the comics are set in black and white. The comics would make up for it with the Story.

Stay safe poker playas!
