What to look forward to in 2021 – The Vaccine
Publish date: January 4, 2021

There is only one way to describe 2020. However, you can use different words to describe it. You can use Covid-19, coronavirus, pandemic, lockdown, and so many others. But in the end, it was about how something smaller than a dot wreck havoc on the world and brought it to a standstill.

But it is now 2021, and what it will be the word to describe it is hope!

Vaccines are now available, and there are five vaccines approved/authorized for use! and we are here to give you some information about the vaccines.

Tozinameran(Pfizer–BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine)

The first vaccine to be cleared by the World Health Organization(WHO) for emergency use. It is sold under the brand name Comirnaty. Developed by BioNTech in cooperation with Pfizer. It is both the first COVID-19 vaccine to be authorized by a stringent regulatory authority for emergency use and the first cleared for regular use.

What it is: The vaccine uses a genetic molecule called messenger RNA (mRNA) to generate coronavirus spike protein in our cells, which would prompt an immune response when released into the body.

Doses: Two doses, given 28 days apart

AZD1222(Covishield or ChAdOx1 nCoV-19)

AZD1222, also known as Covishield or ChAdOx1 nCoV-19, A COVID-19 vaccine that was developed by Oxford University and AstraZeneca.

What it is: British-Swedish company AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford developed a vaccine using an adenovirus, which usually causes colds in chimpanzees. The virus was altered so it produces coronavirus proteins that will generate an immune response in humans.

Doses: Two doses, given 28 days apart

mRNA-1273(Moderna COVID-19 vaccine)

mRNA-1273, more commonly known as the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, is a COVID-19 vaccine developed by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA), and Moderna.

What it is: Moderna’s vaccine also uses mRNA. When injected into our cells, it produces spike proteins, which when released into the body provokes an immune response.

Doses: Two doses, given 28 days apart

Gam-COVID-Vac(Sputnik V)

Sputnik V is a COVID-19 vaccine developed by the Gamaleya Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology and registered on 11 August 2020 by the Russian Ministry of Health.

Gam-COVID-Vac was approved for distribution in Russia.

What it is: The Sputnik V is a viral vector vaccine based on two adenoviruses. The New York Times’ COVID-19 vaccine tracker said that by combining two adenoviruses (Ad5 and Ad26) that have been tested as vaccines in the past, “Russian researchers hoped to avoid a situation in which the immune system could learn to recognize the vaccine as a foreign object that needed to be destroyed.”

Doses: Two doses, given 21 days apart

CoronaVac(Sinovac)

CoronaVac is a COVID-19 vaccine candidate developed by the Chinese biopharmaceutical company Sinovac. Beginning in mid-2020, the vaccine candidate was undergoing Phase III clinical research;

What it is: Called CoronaVac, Sinovac uses an inactivated virus which uses a form of the virus that has been weakened so it won’t cause disease, but will still generate an immune response.

Doses: Two doses, given 14 or 28 days apart

What it is: Chinese state-owned Sinopharm is developing two vaccines based on inactivated versions of the coronavirus.

Dosage: Two doses, given 21 days apart.

AD5-nCOV, trade-named Convidicea

D5-nCOV, trade-named Convidicea, is a viral vector vaccine similar to AstraZeneca’s AZD1222 and Gamaleya’s Gam-COVID-Vac that are also in Phase III clinical trials for COVID-19.

Ad5- nCOV can be stored in less extreme cold conditions compared to mRNA vaccines. it requires one dose compared to other vaccines which require 2 doses.

Phase III – results pending.

BBV152 (also known as Covaxin)

BBV152 (also known as Covaxin) is an inactivated virus based COVID-19 vaccine being developed by Bharat Biotech in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research.

Phase III – results pending
