Tips for playing micro tournament
Publish date: August 22, 2020

Micro tournaments are always going to be hot. Small buy-ins with big guarantees will always attract players.

The fun part is that most of them are very affordable that it will not ruin your bankroll. A win also tends to be great, as the guarantees are high.

But it can also end you frustrated and perplexed being beaten by a weird play.

Here are some tips to help you in micro tournaments.

1. Read the fine print.

Any micro tournament with a high guarantee promoted properly can attract a good number of players. However, some of them might have double re-buys and add-ons to make sure to meet the guarantee or suffer an overlay.

Take note as well on the structure as the tournaments might be super turbo on steroids.

Check first the details before jumping in.

2. Expect to play long hours

If the tournament has a good value, then a lot of people will play.

Even if the structure is turbo, the number of entries will still affect how long it can last, be ready.

Be patient. It will be a marathon, not a sprint.

3. Expect the unexpected

The probability of you busting out due to a player whose hand you could never imagine made call is big.

Variance in small stakes poker tournaments is wild.

You are in a field where there is a lot of recreational players.

Whether it is a raise or an all-in, a lot of them will call you for silly reasons.

It will be favorable in the long run, but it can leave you frustrated when it is happening to you now.

4. Do not make elaborate bluff

Making elaborate bluffs at this type of tournament will mostly end in frustration. Understand that recreational players do not care about the hand you are representing.

They only care about their hand and hopefully win.

5. Maximize your big hands.

As most recreational players tend to only care about their hands, this is also an advantage if you have a monster hand.

The reasons they will call your bluff regardless of the size of your bet is the same reason they would call your monster hand.

6. Prepare to fold big hands

How many times have you heard a player saying: “he can not win against those donkeys because they keep getting lucky in the river”?

The truth is, most of the time donkeys are weak in the betting. You can get away from them.

Yes, max it when you have a monster hand, but do not over commit yourself.

The key is to get their chips slowly without making too much risk. Fold a hand or two, if the risk is too much. If you believe you are better than your opponent, then it is only a matter of time.

We hope this can help your game. good luck poker playas!
